Lion red’s history dates back to 1907. Originally known as ‘lion beer’ the brand became know to the public as ‘lion red’ which aptly described its red-coloured label and can. Lion breweries responded by officially changing the brand’s name to lion red in the mid 1980s. Lion red is a full-bodied malt flavoured beer balanced with a hop bitterness. Lion red has a malty aroma followed by a soft fermented estery sweetness. Cleansing bitterness and sweet malt notes dominate rather than hops. The malty flavour and well-balanced bitterness of lion red is a great kiwi match with any bbq meat. The full malt flavours also work well with fish and chips or roast meats with gravy.
